This is a list of my favorite books on homeschooling. Some of them I have read several times and they are in no particular order. If you are not as inclined to reading, a YouTube search will turn up plenty of inspiring talks and interviews by the authors. Julie Bogart is amazing and incredibly inspiring. All of her children have grown into educated and successful adults, and yet, she will take a load off and put you at ease. I find myself identifying with her approach the most. You will find lots from her on Youtube as well as her podcast.
For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer-Macaulay. I am currently reading this with a local Charlotte Mason Group we started. While it is well-loved by many, it isn’t my favorite. I prefer Karen Andreola’s writings.
A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflection on the Gentle Art of Learning by Karen Andreola. In my opinion, this book is the best when it comes to laying out and explaining the Charlotte Mason method. You will also find Mrs. Andreola to be very responsive and helpful if you have a question.
Mother Culture: For a Happy Homeschool by Karen Andreola
The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home by Susan Wise Bauer. This was originally my favorite and it still holds a special place in my heart. I’ve read it through several times and it is super resourceful. This is considered to be the “homeschool bible” by many. I highly recommend it. Most libraries have it, and if they don’t, it’s worth every penny.
Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace by Sarah Mackenzie. I have found this one is a good little devotional after my Bible reading in the morning. It try to read small snippets at a time. It is a very short book.
The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life by Julie Bogart. A new favorite with me! A MUST READ.
Charlotte Mason’s Original Homeschooling Series by Charlotte Mason. My husband gave me this series for Christmas last year. I really enjoy them once in a while, but they are pretty meaty. A friend of mine once said, “ It’s much easier to read about Charlotte Mason’s writings than it is to read her writings.” I think most would agree.
The Call of the Wild and Free: Reclaiming Wonder in Your Child’s Education by Ainsley Arment. A new wonderful read. This book moved me. I’d say it’s probably best for any mom who is thinking about homeschooling. START HERE ^
Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom by Kerry Mcdonald.
Weapons of Mass Instruction: A Teacher’s Journey by John Taylor Gatto
Home Grown: Adventures in Parenting off the Beaten Path, Unschooling, and Reconnecting with the Natural World by Ben Hewitt. This book is really enjoyable. It’s pretty radical and it will make you want to live off the land.
