It’s May and we are feeling “done”. Warm weather is calling our name and we are scaling back. Here is an example of our simplified schedule. Screen limits are still in place, so we are just freeing up more time for free play, creating, and discovery.
Morning Basket (simplified)
Leading Little Ones to God: A Book of Bible Teachings by Marian Schoolland
Prayer
Stout-Hearted Seven: Orphaned on the Oregon Trail by Neta Frazier
What Was the Wild West? by Janet B. Pascal
Rescue on the Oregon Trail by Kate Messner
You Wouldn't Want to Be an American Pioneer by Jacqueline Morley
We are enjoying learning about Westward Expansion again. Having driven down to Utah a couple of weeks ago has made it even more meaningful for the kids. “Snake River! We saw the Snake River!” After this state-wide shutdown we plan to make another trip to Whitman Mission in Willamette Valley. Whitman Mission is always a favorite with us, and it’s much more meaningful if you read the book first.
Following morning basket is a little bit of outdoor play. The older girls begin getting themselves organized to do their individual lessons.
Each school-age child does a lesson in language arts, math online (IXL or iReady) for 20 minutes, quiet reading time for 20 minutes, copywork, and a group spelling lesson or game with mommy. The rest of the day is spent listening to audiobooks, baking, drawing, painting, sewing, building (Noelle), sharpening wooden spears (Callum & Collin), bike riding, gardening, and watching educational videos on YouTube.
